Brotman Medical Center, SB 1953 Evaluation
Seismic evaluation and development of conceptual seismic retrofit scheme for upgrade of existing acute care hospital to SPC-2 category in conformance with California SB 1953.
- Existing building is a 166,000 sq foot reinforced concrete framed structure consisting of basement, six stories, and penthouse.
- Evaluation done in response to HAZUS analysis of SPC-1 rated structure, performed by State of California, Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) to provide seismic retrofit scheme for reassignment of building to SPC-2 rating.
- Use of CA Admin. Code 2010, CA Building Code 2010 and ASCE Standard 7-05 to establish capacity of existing seismic systems.
- Retrofit scheme consisted of: new concrete shear walls and collectors, retrofit of existing shear walls and shear wall/slab connections, new concrete slabs for force transfer to new shear walls, strengthening of existing diaphragms, and constructing new concrete footings, grade beams and caissons under new and existing shear walls.
